Ryan Hughes grew up in Boston building things. At scale, process becomes load-bearing. The careful review cycles, the layered approvals, the structured cadences — they exist because when you're operating at Google's scope, a fast mistake is an expensive mistake. Ryan internalized what that engineering environment produces: rigorous, durable systems. But he also internalized what it costs: speed.
"At big companies, you learn how to build things right. At startups, you learn how to build things fast. The best founders figure out how to do both."
Inside Snapchat: Watching a Startup Go Public
Ryan's time at Snapchat was a different kind of education. He joined the privacy team in the post-IPO phase — exactly the moment when a company that was built on startup energy starts formalizing into something more structured.
The shift is real and it's fast. The informal decision-making that made a startup feel alive gets replaced by processes designed for accountability, compliance, and the expectations of public shareholders. Some of that is necessary. But the people who joined for the startup feel notice.
For Ryan, watching that transition from the inside answered a question he didn't know he was asking: if the thing he loved about these companies was the energy of building, and that energy compresses after IPO, then what he was actually chasing wasn't a job title at a recognizable company — it was the feeling of making something from scratch.
Why He Left: Ownership, Speed, and the Real Work
The stability of big tech is real. So is the compensation, the brand recognition on your resume, and the quality of the colleagues you work alongside. Ryan isn't dismissive of any of that.
But what he couldn't get at large companies was ownership of outcome. At Google or Snapchat, you work on a slice of something enormous. The slice matters, but the connection between your effort and the company's trajectory is long and attenuated. At a startup, that feedback loop is immediate.

He also wanted to hire his own team. To pick the tools. To set the architecture from scratch rather than inheriting someone else's decade-old choices. These aren't abstract preferences — they're the specific things that make engineering interesting to him.
Fan Pier Labs: AI Consulting Built for Startups
Fan Pier Labs is Ryan's answer to a specific gap he observed while working in tech: early-stage startups frequently know what they want to build but don't have the engineering infrastructure or AI expertise to build it efficiently. He positioned Fan Pier Labs to fill that gap — providing AI-driven software consulting to help startups move faster without the overhead of a full in-house team.
Landing the first clients required solving the cold-start problem every early consultant faces: why should anyone trust someone with no track record as a founder? Ryan's answer was direct — he led with his Google and Snapchat experience, using those brand names to establish baseline credibility before the consulting track record existed. His existing network from those years became his first business development channel.
It's a playbook worth paying attention to: your corporate experience isn't just a résumé line when you go out on your own. It's your first sales pitch.
What Ryan Actually Thinks About AI
Ryan is bullish on AI — but specifically bullish about where it creates real efficiency rather than where it generates hype. His practical view: the industries that will move fastest on AI adoption are those where the output is content, decisions, or code, and where regulatory friction is low. Customer service, marketing, software development, and internal operations are already being reshaped.
Healthcare, finance, and other regulated sectors will adopt AI — but the compliance layer will slow the timeline. Founders in those spaces shouldn't assume the tools available to a SaaS startup are equally available to them without significant adaptation.
For founders building outside those regulated domains: tools like OpenAI's API, increasingly capable coding assistants, and AI-powered workflow automation are available right now and genuinely compress what a small team can do. The founders who are moving fastest aren't waiting for better AI — they're building with the AI that exists today.
"The question isn't whether to integrate AI into your startup. It's which problems you should be solving with it first."
The Real Learning Curve
Ryan is direct about what surprised him in the transition from employee to founder: at a large company, you inherit infrastructure. There are tools for everything, processes for everything, and support teams for everything. At a startup, you build the infrastructure while simultaneously trying to use it.
Setting up billing systems, choosing a tech stack, figuring out how to manage clients, writing contracts, doing sales — none of this is what engineers train for. Ryan's advice for anyone considering a similar move: expect the first six months to feel like you're moving backward, because you're building the runway while also trying to take off.
The growth, when it comes, is real and fast. But the initial disorientation is also real, and it's worth planning for rather than being surprised by.
For Founders Considering the Leap
Ryan's advice to engineers or operators still inside big tech who are thinking about the jump to startups: don't wait for the perfect idea or the perfect moment. Consider joining an early-stage company first if founding feels like too large a leap — the operational and cultural education you get from being employee #4 at a 10-person startup is more relevant to founding than anything you'll learn inside Google.
If you're going to found something, go all in. The people who straddle both worlds — keeping the stable job while "working on something on the side" — rarely build anything with enough momentum to actually escape velocity. The startup world rewards full commitment.
And enjoy the uncertainty. The ambiguity that makes big company people uncomfortable is the same thing that makes startup work genuinely interesting. If you can reframe it as the point rather than the problem, the whole experience changes.
